In 1989 Denmark become the very first European country to legalize
same sex marriages. Not only did they allow the marriage of the same gender, but they also offer for gay partnership the same rights as for heterosexual couples. Homosexual couples are allowed to adopt, they are allowed to artificially inseminate and are allowed the rights to do anything that a heterosexual couple can do.
Thats awesome. It would be interesting to see a study that follows the progress of gay couples with children, maybe it would prove something to our conservative bible thumping represntatives in Washington. Obviously there have been studies here in the United States that support homosexual couples rearing children. These children are oftentimes found to be happier and more well adjusted than children of heterosexual couples.
ReplyDeleteThis post makes it seem like most of the US is way behind the times. With Denmark allowing same sex marriage for 22 years it begs the question why we haven't yet. It's unfortunate for homosexual couples in our country but Denmark can be looked at as a perfect case study for the legalization of homosexual marriage.
ReplyDeleteWow. That's something that I would have never guessed. I mean, not the fact that Denmark would actually be alright with homosexual marriages, but the lone fact of how long ago it was legalized. To think that we've been having the debate for years here in the states, and a country in the Eastern hemisphere has already accepted it and made it a part of their culture for more than 20 years.
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible! I have always wanted to visit Denmark just for its scenery and I've also heard that they are great to their women, but I had no idea they were also so accepting of homosexuals. The fact that they have been allowing same sex marriage for so long is astonishing and it unfortunately makes me more disappointed in America's lack of progression and acceptance. If Denmark can allow full gay rights, then what is America's excuse? We are suppose to be the richest, freest, and most accepting country in the world yet we deny a basic human right to select citizens subsequently making those individuals feel like second class citizens. I might just have to move there now. Go Denmark! Great blog!
