More immigration problems

So way back in the 1980s, with its prosperous economy and solid welfare state, Denmark became an increasingly popular destination of choice for asylum seekers and family dependents. It was a place that many became to come to to call home. The majority of them being from non western states.
This, set against a declining birth rate for ethnic Danes, has led to immigrants and their descendents forming a growing chunk of the population. Whereas they are now approaching 6%, back in 1980 they constituted just 1%.

This topic is one of the most hearted debates over in Denmark right now. Do the Danes push to keep these people out? Think about it.

Saving some serious cash

Denmark now has some of the strictest immigration laws in the EU. And right now they are getting some serious benefits from it. Since the enforcement of the new laws Denmark has saved 6 billion Lire. Now that is a lot of cash. The Prime Minister has seen this and thinks it is great. He said, "Now that we can see that it does matter who comes into the country, I have no scruples in further restricting those who one can suspect will be a burden on Denmark."

This could be a problem for some of those living in the country. Better hope they are all productive active Danish people.

It's time to gamble!

The Denmark Government recently announced that they have decided to deregulate gambling in the country. Denmark has seen a gaming monopoly run for sixty years in the country by Danske Spil which was state owned. The government will now begin to offer a regulated gaming market.
One main reason the government has decided to get rid of the gaming monopoly is because the European Commission had filed a lawsuit against the monopoly accusing them of violating free market regulations. Denmark fought the suit by stating 1.6 billion of their revenues went to charitable and youth organizations. But this did nothing for the European Commission.

Who knows, maybe Denmark will be the next Vegas...pshh. Doubt it.

Back in the day....

Let's flashback to the 1940's. Denmark was full of Jewish people, and the Nazi occupation was in full swing. Denmark has always been known for its humanitarian views as well as its feelings of equality among people. So the country new that Hitlers army was coming and in a desperate attempt to save the Jewish people they smuggled them out of the country at night. They were very successful, and was the only country to save its Jewish population during WWII. Impressive huh?

Denmark and its tough new immigration laws

So, in short, because of the immense amount of immigrants into Denmark the past few years Denmark decided enough was enough. No longer is Denmark the hippy of Europe regarding immigration. From now on it takes 7 years instead of three to become citizen. No married people under the age of 24 are allowed; due to forced marriages. The stripping of the welfare for the new citizens has happened, as well as a test that takes place on Danish language as well as the Danish history. This is big time here folks. Thinking about moving to Denmark anyone? Maybe now isn't a great time.

A Cartoon kills?

In Denmark there has been an influx in Islamic immigrants in the past few decades. While Denmark has always put itself in a place where entry into the country was alright, and the freethinking Danish people embraced new cultures, we see a turn in another direction. In a weekly article a cartoon was publish depicting Muhammed. Now as we all know, Muslims are not okay with that. An innocent cartoon aimed at the Islamic people ended with dozens dead in the street as well as the Danish flag being burned in Islamic states all over the world. Looks like things are going to be "heating" up.  :p
