So way back in the 1980s, with its prosperous economy and solid welfare state, Denmark became an increasingly popular destination of choice for asylum seekers and family dependents. It was a place that many became to come to to call home. The majority of them being from non western states.
This, set against a declining birth rate for ethnic Danes, has led to immigrants and their descendents forming a growing chunk of the population. Whereas they are now approaching 6%, back in 1980 they constituted just 1%.
This topic is one of the most hearted debates over in Denmark right now. Do the Danes push to keep these people out? Think about it.
